Come see “FLOW” at Monday Night Movie Club

flow_posterThe Flow Factory will be kicking off Monday NIght Movie Club in June with a screening and discussion of the film “FLOW” at 8pm on June 2. The winner of multiple awards, the documentary by Irena Salina explores what could possibly be the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century – the World Water Crisis. With 70% of our water used for agriculture, 20% by industry, and 10% by regular human consumption, multinational corporations have seen the possibility to make a profit from our most necessary resource, and have begun to claim it as their own before even asking the question if it is morally right to assume ownership of such a shared resource.

Sharing stories from Bolivia, Africa, India, and the United States, where an estimated 500,000 to 7 million people get sick from drinking American tap water every year, the film shines a light on the fact that although 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water, it has become a 400 billion dollar global industry, the third largest behind electricity and oil. Filled with some frightening statistics, these eye-popping tales should wake us up to the reality that a small group of people are making decision that affect us all, yet use only profit margin as their deciding factors.

By educating ourselves on how the water we take for granted is provided and how many others are denied access to this shared resource by the sociopathic obsession with money, perhaps we can come together to find ways to ensure that every member of our human family can be provided with clean, chemical-free water. As the building block of life and the component which comprises roughly 70% of the human body, water, as with air, should be free to all and not commodified and used as an instrument of war. May we come to the point where we decide to no longer repeat the mistakes of the past, but life flow as it should, in the spirit of peace and love.

Monday Night Movie Club is a pay-what-you-want gathering. Members are invited and encouraged to bring both food for thought and food to share as well as any other beverages that might be tastier than the tap water we have to offer. Monday Night Movie Club is an offering of The Flow Factory and is currently held at 2035 Cornell Street.
